As our Nabinabah Rockafella mares started to retire from polo, we decided that it was time to consider a new colt.  We still wanted to stay in the ASH registered field, but felt that we probably needed to look into something with a good Thoroughbred bloodline to help add some extra flat speed in our horses as well as perhaps influence a slightly finer frame.  The Rockafella horses have great hindquarter power, with the perfect amount of agility and strength for competitive sports, but where we might gain the edge with take-off power, we could see room for improvement on the flat speeds (with the exception of a few freaks like Blitz and Serene).  We also decided we could move in a direction of a slightly finer conformation, as we can sometimes struggle to get the weight off the horses in good seasons, whilst being careful not to sacrifice the strength in body and bone that we have successfully achieved in our breed.

When Peter Haydon of Haydon Horse Stud, Blandford NSW, released his catalogue for his October 2011 Colt Sale, we busily went to work to see if any of these well-bred colts were going to be what we were after.  Robert and Jane have had some lovely Haydon horses playing over the years, so it was no surprise that there were plenty of pedigrees in the catalogue that we all liked.  After narrowing the list down to about 3 or 4 of what we favoured ‘on paper’, it was when Haydon Zane walked out at the pre-sale inspection, Robert and Rebecca instantly knew he was also the type they were chasing.

Haydon Zane was 2 years old when he was purchased and before we put him to stud we had Rob Frewin of Quirindi break him in.  We really had no intension of playing him because at the end of the day he was bought purely as a sire and if he is to succeed at this then his progeny will speak for themselves.

Haydon Zane has a striking presence about him with plenty of length in body and rein.  He has a good structural bone with a thoroughbred style of body which is what we were looking for.  He, himself, has a lovely movement and is extremely quick on his feet – he oozes confidence but loves to be with people. His first crop of foals was in 2012 and so far it looks like the Zane/Rockafella combination could be just what we have been waiting for.

 HAYDON ZANE’S FAMILY:

  • Dam:   HAYDON MOONSTRUCK – HSH who was out of HAYDON BALLERINA – HSH and by HAYDON DRAWN – TB
    • Zane belongs to the ‘Thora Family’ of the Haydon Horse Stud – one of the old proven Bloomfield families tracing back to the 1880’s.
    • Ancestors on the maternal line include the campdrafting mare and namesake of this family, Haydon Thora, who was campaigned successfully through the 1920’s.  Thora had some high performing campdrafting daughters, including Haydon Twilight, dam of Champion polo mare Haydon Eulalie who played in the finals of the R.A.S. Polo and the Gold Cup in 1954.  Twilight appears twice in this line where she is also the dam of the stallion Haydon Bright Valais.
    • Haydon Moonstruck is out of Haydon Ballerina who produced some good horses for the Haydon Stud including Nat Buchanan winner Haydon Dancer.  Note: Haydon Dancer was by Belltrees Musket – IS, a full brother to Nabinabah Rockafella’s grandmother, Nabinabah Zephyr.  Ballerina is also the grandmother of Haydon Nightwatch – a successful sire for Haydon Horse Stud.
    • Zane’s half-sister, Haydon Paloma by Ellerston Solar, is currently playing polo for the Haydons picking up a Champion Polo prize at Gunnedah 2013.
    • Zane’s maternal Grandsire, Haydon Drawn, was a successful race horse and was awarded the Australian Champion Three Year Old.  He’s greatest success was probably as a sire for the Haydon Horse Stud producing many champion Polo and Polocrosse horses.  Drawn was a big influence on our decision to buy Zane.

  • SIRE: TECHRICO – TB is by the thoroughbred Champion Sire Zabeel and out of Champion mare Vaindarra (SOD Vain).
    • His full brother was a four time race winner and whilst Techrico was unraced due to injury, his sire Zabeel has sired the winners of 43 Group One races, 147 Stakes, 3 Melbourne Cups, 3 Caulfield Cups and 4 Cox Plates.

    • Vaindarra, herself, is by the Champion Sire Vain and was awarded Australasian Champion Two Year Old filly after her Stakes winning performances.
    • Interesting Fact: Black Caviar has a double cross of Vain in her pedigree.  Vain was a horse that many regard as Australia’s greatest sprinter.
    • Techrico is proving to be a valuable sire at the Haydon Horse Stud across disciplines.  Haydon Zorba (by Techrico) won Champion Yearling Colt at the 2012 ASH Nationals.
