Wallaroi Smokey Padre
WALLAROI SMOKEY PADRE – HSH

WALLAROI SMOKEY PADRE – HSH was bred by Robert Doolin at a time when his polo career was hitting its straps and the need for more quality polo ponies was required.  One of his favourite mares of his early career was Pepi (Wallaroi Pepi), bred by Robert’s father, Dick.  She was out of fabulous polo mare of Dick’s called Verdict, who was a registered Thoroughbred.  Verdict won many polo pony prizes at Gunnedah and Goondiwindi, but also took out the South Queensland campdraft.  Verdict was one of the horses Dick took over and played in New Zealand and Sinclair Hill played her in two chukkas in the final of the Australasian Gold Cup. Pepi’s sire was the thoroughbred, Gemborough, taking in the Gainsborough bloodline through his sire Emborough.

Pepi was purposely selected to be the dam of the future new bloodstock sire by putting her to the thoroughbred stallion, Smokey Saint.  Smokey Saint was out of St Valci and by the legendary Lyndhurst Stud sire Smokey Eyes (IRE).

In 2013, Smokey Eyes was inducted in to Racing Queensland’s Hall of Fame.  A chestnut son of Stardust, (the same sire as that of Star Kingdom) he is also the grandson of the world famous sire Hyperion.  For almost a decade, Smokey Eyes was the leading Sire of Winners for the whole of Australia and Queensland’s leading sire 15 times.  Smokey Eyes is credited as the dam sire of over 1000 winners of 4700 races and produced 25 Stakes winners in Queensland, including Eye Liner and Bright Shadow.

Smokey Padre was never campaigned, but rather put straight to stud over Robert’s chosen broodmare line. The Smokey Padre progeny have proven to include some outstanding performers on the polo field for Robert as well as for others.  Today all of our current broodmares are retired polo mares by Smokey Padre and have been joined with Nabinabah Rockafella – HSH.

Smokey Padre died at “Wallaroi”, North Star in 1998.
